We invite you to visit our latest exhibition, A Theatrical Thunderbolt: Cuban Playwright Virgilio Piñera in his Centenary.

Curated by Dr. Lillian Manzor, Associate Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Miami, this display is part of the University of Miami's homage to the theatrical innovations of Cuban playwright Virgilio Piñera Llera (1912-1979) on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Credited with having brought modernism to Latin American theater and for writing the first theater of the absurd play, Piñera is one of Latin America's most important playwrights.

The exhibition focuses on Piñera's theatrical production in Greater Cuba with a special emphasis on the plays staged in the United States. It includes materials held at the Cuban Heritage Collection and in the Cuban Theater Digital Archive such as original playbills, photographs, stage and costume designs and other theater ephemera. Video clips from different productions of Piñera's plays area also featured.

Theatrical Thunderbolt will be on display through the fall 2012 semester in the Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion on the second floor of the Otto G. Richter Library.

We are happy to share our recently digitized Tobacco Art Collection. Spanning the late 19th and 20th centuries, this collection contains art and ephemera associated with the Cuban tobacco industry. Items include commercial tobacco packaging labels, cigar trademarks, several cigar bands, and two cigar boxes. The materials consist of various gifts that have been brought together under this collection. The tobacco industry in Cuba stretches far into the island's colonial past, when Spanish settlers built large plantations throughout the countryside. Pinar del Río province quickly became the heartland of tobacco agriculture. Cuban cigars gained international renown in the 1800s. Some of the most famous Cuban tobacco brands can trace their history back over a century and a half.

Student volunteers at CHC for the summer

By Mariana O'Naghten, American University student

Over the past month I have been volunteering in the Cuban Heritage Collection. As an art history major, I was taken aback by the extensive amount of Cuban artifacts the CHC has to offer. Volunteering here was an unforgettable experience. While sorting through materials from the Collection, my grandparents' stories of Cuba came to life. I enjoyed seeing Cuba's history being preserved and archived. From the newspapers to the books, I was mostly impressed by the music collection in the CHC. During the month I volunteered in the CHC, I worked with various music collections like the Ramón S. Sabat Panart Collection. I archived and catalogued old music sheets, records, tapes, and reels. As athletes from every country marched through the Olympic Stadium for the close of the 2012 games, the Cuban delegation held wider grins than most. The island nation had completed another tremendous run in London this year. Cuba finished 16th in the overall medal count, with five gold medals, three silver, and six bronze. The small Caribbean country of just over ten million people led all of Latin America in the gold medal count, beating out heavyweights like Mexico and Brazil.

But for Cuban athletics, London 2012 marked just another leap in a long path of success. The island's colorful history in the Olympics stretches back over a century - to Paris in 1900 for the second games of the Olympiad. Continue reading »
